the Core i7 platform comes backed with a totally new chipset, while it also exclusively adopts DDR3 memory. The Phenom II X4 955 processors on the other hand, work with existing AM2+ motherboards while DDR3 memory support is optional.
This not only makes the Phenom II X4 955 more affordable, but also much more compatible, as it can be used with existing hardware. This gives those already using the AM2+ platform a nice and cheap upgrade path, as they can move to AMD’s flagship processor for just $245 US without having to sacrifice their existing hardware.

Forgetting the Core 2 Duo E8600, the Phenom II X4 955 was for the most part faster than the Core 2 Quad Q9650, and at almost $100 cheaper this is great news for bargain hunters. Given that the Phenom II X4 955 ($245) will be priced closer to the Core 2 Quad Q9550 ($270), it is likely that the new AMD processor will win that battle in terms of performance and value. |
